May your INDEPENDENCE DAY* be wonderful and full of both fun and gratitude.
* The fourth of July is just a date. Independence is what we celebrate. And another video that always brings tears to my eyes:
Remember that the American Revolution, in which fought several of my ancestors – two of whom, Walter Hunt*, and Benjamin Pearson, I can document my ties to – was unique. It was not a revolt led by peasants, but many of the Founders were, in fact, wealthy and influential men with enormous stakes, risking enormous losses. They did this not for personal gain; many lost all they had, but for a principle: Liberty. George Washington, in particular, surrendered his power after two terms – after admonishing military officers who wanted to stage a coup to make him king.
* Walter Hunt crossed the Delaware with Washington.
